How to Track District Court Cases Online in India

District courts handle the majority of cases filed in India — from civil suits and criminal trials to family disputes and land matters. Thanks to the eCourts Mission Mode Project, you can now track district court cases online from anywhere. This guide covers everything you need to know.

The eCourts Mission Mode Project

The eCourts Mission Mode Project is a national initiative by the Government of India, conceptualized under the National e-Governance Plan. It aims to digitize all Indian courts and provide online access to case information.

  • Phase I (2007) — Began the computerization of district courts across India, including hardware setup and software deployment
  • Phase II (2015) — Focused on making case information available online through the eCourts portal (services.ecourts.gov.in), with features like CNR-based search, cause lists, and order uploads
  • Phase III (ongoing) — Aims to further modernize courts with e-filing, virtual hearings, and interoperability between courts

Today, virtually all district courts in India are covered under the eCourts project, making their case data accessible online.

Ways to Track District Court Cases Online

1. Search by CNR Number

The CNR (Case Number Record) is the most reliable way to track a district court case. Every case filed in a district court under the eCourts system is assigned a unique 16-digit CNR number.

  1. Go to the eCourts portal or LegalIntelli Case Tracker
  2. Select "CNR Number" search
  3. Enter your 16-digit CNR number
  4. View complete case details including status, hearing dates, and orders

2. Search by Case Type and Number

If you know the case type (e.g., Civil Suit, Criminal Case, Motor Accident Claim) and the case number with year:

  1. Select the state, district, and court complex on the eCourts portal
  2. Choose "Case Number" search
  3. Select the case type from the dropdown
  4. Enter the case number and year
  5. View results

3. Search by Filing Number

When a case is filed, a filing number is assigned before the case is formally registered. If you have this number:

  1. Select "Filing Number" search on the eCourts portal
  2. Enter the filing number and year
  3. This is particularly useful for newly filed cases that may not yet have a case number

4. Search by Party Name

You can also search by party name — the name of the petitioner or respondent. Select the correct state and district, enter the party name, and browse through matching results.

What Information is Available Online?

For district court cases tracked through eCourts, you can typically access:

  • Case status — Whether the case is pending or disposed
  • Next hearing date — When the case is next listed
  • Case history — A chronological list of all hearings with dates and purpose
  • Orders — Interim and final orders (where uploaded by the court)
  • Party details — Names of petitioner(s) and respondent(s)
  • Advocate details — Names of advocates appearing in the case
  • Filing date and registration date

  • No CAPTCHA — Unlike the eCourts portal, LegalIntelli doesn't require solving CAPTCHAs for every search

Tips for Tracking District Court Cases

  • Save your CNR number — The CNR is your case's unique ID. Keep it saved for quick access. Learn about CNR format.
  • Check cause lists — Cause lists are published a day before hearings, showing which cases will be heard and in which courtroom
  • Set up alerts — Instead of manually checking eCourts daily, use LegalIntelli to get notified automatically
  • Download orders promptly — When orders become available online, download them for your records
